Earlier this year a radical group of nurserymen and garden center operators began a group of Facebook for independent garden centers to discuss business events and trends. More than a group hug page this venture was an open forum to discuss and share issues vital to the garden industry. Before anyone could blink 350 small medium and large IGCs were in the mix. They represented every aspect of garden center operation in the country and even a few from around the world.
It was noticed by industry writers and people began to take notice. Well too many took notice it seems. Somehow an employee of Lowe's was allowed to enter or remain in the group. Another individual, who while working for a garden center, it was determined the garden center was owned by a firm who sells grows for box stores on the Eastern seaboard.
A firestorm erupted on New Year's Eve demanding the "imposters/spies" be removed from the group. What ended up happening was a member of the group being "timed out", stand in the corner if you will, for vehemently demanding the strict membership policies be enforced.
I am happy to say Jim Monroe of http://www.hortcoutureplants.com/ seized this opportunity to begin a new group and limit membership to real independents.
If you are a reader of this blog, work in the independent aspect of garden centers and wish to participate in issues pertaining to our industry ask Jim for membership through his Facebook page.
By the way I am the offender who was placed in "Time Out" just for asking that the former group ICGN stick to it's mission of Indies only.
Garden advice you can dig!
